iPhone 5S Vs iPhone 5C : A Comparison

The expectations of the iPhone fans turned out true when Apple announced two brand new iPhones last night; the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. The new phones will be available for purchase in stores on the 20th of September, 2013. This also means discontinuation of the iPhone 5, whereas the iPhone 4S will still be offered.

So without further delay, let’s have a quick rundown of the basic features of both phones, and how they compare with each other.

The iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5S comes in three different colors; silver, gray and gold. (The old iPhone 5 was only available in black and white). Fitted with a new 64-bit architecture A7 processor, the iPhone 5S boasts a much faster performance and the ability to run complicated algorithms.

The iPhone 5C

In comparison, the iPhone 5C is more alike to the old iPhone 5, with the rear side being switched with a full piece of colored polycarbonate. The iPhone 5C uses a dual core Apple A6 processor, which is again the same as was used in the old iPhone 5. The iPhone 5C will be available in 5 bright colors; yellow, white, pink, blue and green!

Dimensions and size

The dimensions of the iPhone 5S are 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm and 112g, which are pretty much the same as the old iPhone 5. The iPhone 5S is the bigger phone, with a difference only being in millimeters!

Weight wise, the iPhone 5S is lighter, weighing only 112g, with the iPhone 5C weighing 132. (Thanks to the steel ring underneath the backside polycarbonate case)

The biggest physical change in the phone is the updated Home button design, covered by a stain-less steel ring and a dual LED-flash on the back-side.

Then there’s the fingerprint scan function that lets you open the phone lock in place of a passcode, Then there’s the brilliant (and unique) feature that allows you to sign-in to iTunes using the fingerprint scan function and make purchases (apps and software) with a press of the button.

Display and Graphics

Both phones have exactly the same Retina display (with 4-inch touch sensitive) that came with the old iPhone 5. The resolution of the screen is crispier and clear supporting upto 640 x 1136 pixels. However, the overall display is a bit of a disappointment as many were expecting a larger screen size and HD resolution.

The gaming capabilities of both phones have been improved. During the demo on stage, the game Infinity Blade III by Epic Game was shown as an example to demonstrate the raw power of the iPhone 5S and its graphics capabilities.

Camera

There have been a few improvements in the camera department, with mainly a new camera app, that helps you with auto-tone, white balance and exposure settings. The iPhone 5S comes with a 28 MP camera that can take well-balanced pictures with a dual LED flash option even in low light. It also has the capability to take 10 burst mode pictures in a second.

Both the phones have support for 1080 video, with the iPhone 5S taking it up a notch with a Slo-Mo mode. (720p Video at 120FPS!)

Operating System

Both iPhones will run the iOS 7. The iPhone 5S has an advantage because of its ability to run the 64-bit version of the iOS 7, and thus will be faster than the iPhone 5C.

Battery Life

Both iPhones are expected to last for a total of 10 hours on talk-time, and 250 hours on stand-by. Using the Wi-Fi will get you around 10 hours as well, with 10 hours of video and 40 hours of audio playback.

Cost

The iPhone 5S will cost a total of $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB), and $399 (64GB).

Compared to the iPhone 5S, the price of the iPhone 5C will be only $99 for the 16 GB version, which is a 100 dollars less than the iPhone 5.
