When embarking on a road trip, it’s a good idea to try to plan everything out ahead of time in order to avoid complications, but, sometimes, you might need a little help on the road, whether to check weather conditions, find gas or keep the kids entertained – and that’s where the iPhone comes in.

These internet and multimedia enabled phones from Apple are absolute godsends on the road. With that in mind, here are some essential iPhone apps for your next road trip.

1. uPackingList

It is almost a given that somebody will inevitably remember that they left something really important at home – once they’re 100 miles away. In order to avoid that, download uPackingList which comes with a 300 item list of things you might need and allows you to create your own packing lists.

2. MapsBuddy

Gone are the days of looking at large paper maps with incredibly small lines and hard to read names. MapsBuddy is a great application that allows you to search Google Maps quickly and easily.

3. Google Earth

Although Google Earth doesn’t provide directions, what it does provide is a way to take a quick peek at the place you’re about to visit. Google Earth provides satellite imagery of any location on Earth. If the kids want to know what the next stop or national monument looks like, they can take a look with this app.

4. Yelp

Yelp is a website that features user reviews on hundreds of shops, restaurants, hotels and other locations. With their iPhone app, you can access these reviews on the road and use them to avoid visiting any dumps or places with really awful customer service.

5. RoadTrip

RoadTrip is the motherload of all road trip apps. It can track mileage, expenses, fuel prices and other data, allowing you to calculate exactly how much money you’re spending and if you’re keeping to your budget.

6. The Weather Channel

With weather forecasts for the exact location you’re driving through along with long-term forecasts and radar maps, you’ll be prepared for anything Mother Nature tries to throw at you with The Weather Channel app.

7. Cheap Gas!

Cheap Gas will locate the cheapest gas possible in your current location, and spare you from having to drive up and down through town craning your neck out the window as you try to compare gas prices in your head.

8. Road Trip Fun

Road Trip Fun will hopefully keep the kids entertained for hours with lists of road games and explanations of how to play them. If your kids have never experienced the joy of playing I Spy, 20 Questions and License Plates, then this app is perfect for them.

Oh, there we go. I was looking for an app that can keep the kids busy during the road trips we’re going to have. Sure, they love being in a comfy family car, but there’s going to be a time when they’re going to ask you to play with them, or something. I’ll try Road Trip Fun out!
