An Introduction to Version Control

Posted on 10. Aug, 2009 by Douglas Reynolds.

Version Control (VC) is a system of keeping track of files, or sets of file states as they change over time.  More succinctly, it is a change management system, sometimes referred to as revision control or source control. Using a Version Control System (VCS), an individual or team can keep track of changes that occur and save versions of those changes (change sets) that may later be referenced, rolled-back (reverted), shared between multiple people working on the same files or merged.  VCS functions as a method of making incremental backups that fit nicely into existing work flows.

HDClone Review – Cloning A Windows Virtual Drive

HDCloneLogo HDClone is a utility for cloning physical or logical drives.  Cloning is the process of copying the exact contents of one drive to another.  Although the drives themselves may be different, various sizes (the target drive cannot be smaller), partition schemas, drive types (i.e. IDE, SATA, SATAII), the data from the source drive will be duplicated exactly on the second drive.

Cloning is an excellent method of creating bootable backups which will indeed suffice to allow the direct replacement of one drive with another, thus allowing booting up to an exact representation of the original drive from the cloned one.  Cloning is also an excellent approach to drive upgrade.

Last time, I completed detailing the steps needed to clone a disk image to an external drive using SuperDuper.  The process was quite seamless and very simple, SuperDuper did a great job and stands up to its name.  We ended up doing some general comparisons between the old and new drive and are now ready to remove the new drive from the external enclosure, remove the old drive from a MacBook, and install the new drive in its place.  We’ll then boot up with the new drive to see how it went.

I left off in Hard Drive Upgrade with an external drive prepared and ready to receive an image of my existing primary drive.  That article discussed backup strategies, a list of items needed in order to perform the data migration and what is needed in order to get started. We then stepped through the process of formatting and partitioning an external drive.

In this article, we are going to go through the process of using SuperDuper.

external-harddriveAn external drive is an excellent way to create on-site backups of your data.  External drives are quite small and can function perfectly for taking your data with you and sharing on other host computers.  Often times, organizing large files, such as video projects, images, audio, etc. are more conveniently stored on an external drive, especially when local disk space is a consideration.  Using an external drive is one of the easiest ways to transfer a disk image to a new drive in the effort of upgrading one’s primary drive.

For my personal situation, which was to create an image of my existing drive and transfer it onto an upgrade drive, I decided that an external drive was better, faster, cheaper.
