identica logoDoes the micro-blogging space have room for one more?  The Internet has spoken, and the answer is YES.  Identi.ca is the new micro-blogging service on the block.  It joins the party of services like Twitter, Plurk, Jaiku, Pownce and many others.  The next question you are going to ask is probably going to be something along the lines of “What makes this different?”

The clear answer to that is identi.ca is an Open Network Service.  This is a factor that truly differentiates itself from its competitors.  At its core, it is still very much like all of the other micro-blogging services out there, but by being open, identi.ca may open a lot of doors and opportunity for itself.  In a recent post, sarahintampa asked her subscribers on identi.ca why they used the service, and most of the responses centered around identi.ca being open source.

Being open source can create a unique sense of pride and community.  People that use open source software really feel like they are part of something and can often contribute to it in some way.  I would almost equate it to the community that has built up around Mac users.  The base of those communities is strong and will carry the torch of that product or service through the good and bad times.

Identi.ca has picked up a little steam over the past few days by announcing they are using the Twitter API.  This is great news, because identi.ca can now be easily integrated into almost any software or application that uses Twitter.  This can already be seen, as Twhirl and Posty have made updates to their software in order to support identi.ca.

I have jumped on the bandwagon and created a profile.  You can find me right here.  Join identi.ca with me and let me know what you think.  Also, make sure to check out the Connect With Us page to join me on all the other social networks.
