Opera is one browser which could push through the popularity of Internet Explorer, the authority of Mozilla Firefox and establish a place for itself in the current browser market. Opera is the first one to innovate speed dial, trash can, session management and many other cool features.
With all these features present out f the box right from the setup installation, Opera is always one of the first few softwares I install after installing a fresh copy of Windows on my PC.
Opera has an extremely lightweight user interface, and it just released vesion 10, the final release after a series of RC releases and the recently launched Opera 10 has many new as well as improved features.
New Features
- With version 10, Opera can update automatically without annoying you with popup messages when you are seriously at work. The download notification rests on the bottom panel, and displays a simple update progress. It also shows an update availability.
- There is a crash logging system which helps aggregate user feedback and crash logs from desktops around the world. This has helped Opera improve a lot on bugs.
- The spell checker is a handy tool, but if you do not need it, it can be disabled. The spell checker can also be used with many different languages and supports over 51 languages.
- The new Presto 2.2 engine, the backbone of Opera is said to be 2.5 times faster than the earlier version of Presto.
- Opera Turbo, which is the best feature in this list, speeds up your browsing on a slow connection. It minimizes bandwidth usage using data and image compression technologies.
- Visual tabs lets you have a sneak peek at your page content, keeping you aware of tabbed page contents at all times.
These are just the new features which have been added in the version 10. In addition to these, many old features were improved in the latest release 10 Of opera. They include better Dragonfly developer tools, enhanced mail with rich text support and a better regular expression engine. Apart from that, Opera has a good extended compliance to web specifications as well.
Web Support
- CSS : Support for transparency and color crossfading has been improved.
- HTML: HTML 5 support has been included into Opera 10. With this new version of HTML, we can specify <canvas> like tags to export both images .
- SVG : SVG stands for Salable Vector Graphics. Support fo Scalable Vector Graphics has been improved and we can now use SVG font files and modify SVG animations.
- Support for True Type Fonts and Open Type Fonts has also been improved a lot.
With all these features packed into the browser sized below 10 MB, Opera is a must try software. The browser is available for both Windows and Linux. On Linux, it uses the QT UI front-end and the graphics might not come off like Vista or Windows 7, but it works like a breeze.
