I still don’t understand the relevance of Facebook. It’s the same thing as just creating a website; people have done that for years. All facebook has done is nourish the rampant narcissism our teenagers seem to have these days. It’s just another “MySpace”. I don’t see the point.

I completely respect your opinion. I work as a media strategist and sometimes for small companies investing into a website is not in their budget. Considering a site might run them anywhere between $1500 – $10k, we look for alternatives that can give them just as much traction and community development.

I admit, I am a supporter and user of social media, but also understand that not everyone company or every individual feels like it’s a fit for them. I also don’t think that it will “save” the company in any way whatsoever as some others might claim.

I admit that online media, especially interaction tools have gotten some bad press, but I’ve also seen companies leverage the best out of connecting directly with customers, clients, fans, or just the general population. Now perhaps it’s unique for them because they found a fit, but for most it either take another evaluation with some education, or another route that would work better for them.

Regarding your comments for rampant narcissism, I won’t argue that. There’s are large number of people who feel like such services serve as an ego stroke for who and what they think they are. Ultimately this bunch can put a sour taste in people’s mouths, and with justification.

My only comment to that is that like any other form of media or communication tool, it’s only as effective as the person who’s using it. I think you make some valid points here, but overall, I think, like anything else there are indeed two sides, call them pros and cons if you will.

Thanks for taking the time to post!
