We all know how to share links to webpages with our friends; simply share the URL to webpages. Now, how many of us know that we can also share links to certain parts of a webpage?

Yes, it’s as easy as sharing the entire webpage URL with a little extra effort. In this article, we will learn to create URLs which take you directly to parts of interest on a given webpage, say a line or any specific part. Let’s go through the details on how to achieve this using a simple web based application called Citebite.

How to Use Citebite?

Let us consider an example.  Say, I want to share a link to a specific part from an article “How to Create a Facebook Friend List like Google+ Circles” on LostInTechnology with my friend. Sharing the link to the web page would take my friend on the top of the article.

However, I want him to read the article at a certain point. So, I head to the website of Citebite and find two text boxes.

On the first text box, enter the specific section i.e. copy from the site and paste into the box. Text in the example are lines from the said article. On the second text box, enter the URL of the source. Now, hit the button “Make Citebite”. The result of this process will give you a new URL which when you share with your friend, will take him to that specific portion of the article without any manual effort.

Shown above is the link you get on hitting “Make Citebite” and the same you must share with your friend.

When the URL is clicked, the below results are shown.  The highlighted portion show the text that was selected for specific view.

Install the Firefox Extension

If you feel that you need to do this regularly and want to avoid visiting the CiteBite site every time, install the Citebite Extension for Firefox. Now, you can do it without leaving the page you want to share. Make a selection as before>Right Click on it>Select the Citebite option.

You will get a URL result as earlier. However, the extension has a compatibility problem with some versions of Firefox.

Conclusion

There is another option to create a “Bookmarklet” but it is not advised. The other two work just perfectly. Now, you can save yourself some time. Rather than discussing and breaking heads over where to go on a webpage, simply create one such URL and share it with friends.
