How to Create Icons Using Your Own Images

Icons are used to represent the content of your files or folders. There are many sites to download different types of icons, but it’s much more fun to have your own custom icons, especially if they are made from your favorite pictures or images.

The best part of this guide is that you don’t have to have years of graphic design experience to create these icons.  Just a nifty little program and a little free time.

Download SIB Icon Editor

With SIB Icon Editor you can create and edit icons in standard or custom sizes up to 16 million colors. Grab the software real quick, and come right back to learn how to make your new icons.

Steps to Create Icons from Images

After download, Install SIB Icon Editor and run it.  Press on the File button on Menu Bar click on “Create Icon from Image”. This will ask for the image location in your PC select the Image you want to create as Icon as JPG or JPEG in File Types shown in following screen.

Press Open and proceed to edit your icon.

Edit using the options provided. You have a lot of features to change almost every aspect of the image you opened. After doing required customizations, press the OK button.

Save the icon at your desired location using File->Save as. The extension for your icon is “ICO” . This ICO file is useful to set your own icons to your folders.

Change Your Folder Icons

Right Click on the folder you would like to change the icon and go to Properties.

Go to the Customize tab as shown, and click on the Change Icon button shown at the bottom of the Dialog Box.

Select the icon from the path where you saved your image icon.

Press the OK button, and you’ll have your icon displaying on the folder.

Conclusion

By using this tip, you can create your own icons for different kinds of folders like music, documents, video, etc. so that you can easily recognize them.  It is also a great way to customize your computer and give it a unique feel.
