How To Find the Best Gadget Deals Online
Posted on 18. May, 2009 by JP.Thompson in How To, Internet Tools, Links
Your task: Find a new, shiny gadget for your gadget loving friend. But where do you start? Should you go to your local Best Buy and wander around aimlessly? Should you call your techie friend and ask for advice?
None of the above. This article will show you where to start and help you locate a super sweet deal for your friend. The recommended steps for finding the best gadget deal is to visit price comparison sites, check popular gadget blogs for gadget reviews and deals, and then visit a retailer to check for current pricing, availability and reviews.
Use Popular Price Comparison Sites
First, you can use popular deal hunting sites to locate the best price for the gadget. All of the sites function well, and provide good results. Google’s Product Search appears to be the fastest engine, mySimon might “over group” results making it harder to compare results as a whole, and NexTag helps to see where prices are going with a price history graph.
- Google Product Search – A very fast product search engine that returns a large list of results.
- NexTag – Serves up a list of related items along with the originally searched for products and provides a price history graph.
- DealTime – A clean user interface that produces a lot of relevant results.
- PriceGrabber – Suggests items as you type in the search terms, and provides good results.
- mySimon – An easy to use deal hunting engine that automatically groups results by product and price range.
Search Popular Gadget Blogs
Next, you should check out some popular gadget blogs. You may find a good deal on the gadget you are hunting, read a good review about the gadget, or find an alternate gadget (in case the gadget you are looking for is sky high in price.) Gizmodo and Engadget are pretty colorful and opinionated, while Epinion seems a little more down-to-earth.
- Gizmodo – Subtitled “The Gadget Blog”, this site provides reviews on Gadgets, and provides the occasional coupon code to help save some coin.
- Engadget – Provides all kinds of reviews on electronics of all sorts, as well as it’s sister sites for mobile and audio-video.
- Crave – From the CNet network of sites, Crave provides good reviews of new technology.
- Gamespot – For the gamer gadget, it doesn’t hurt to look for a review or two on Gamespot.
- Epinion – This reviews site uses the wisdom of the crowd for opinions on nearly everything, from washing machines to laptops. Epinion also has price search built in.
Check Popular Shopping Sites
In case you don’t find a retailer using a price comparison engine or gadget blog, here is a list of popular shopping sites in which to procure your gadget. Most of the listed sites have decent prices and good reviews. Best Buy might not be the best price online, but you can probably get the gadget now in a local store. For unique gifts where price is less of a concern, try ThinkGeek or W00t! (with its one special item a day.)
- Amazon – Great reviews, decent prices, and reasonable shipping
- Newegg – Good prices, good reviews from knowledgeable geeks, fast shipping, and great customer service (for the occasional product issue.)
- ZipZoomfly – Great prices, clean and feature rich web site.
- Buy.com – Good prices and large catalog of items.
- eBay – Chances are you can find the gadget used, and sell something else at the same time to help pay for it.
- Best Buy – If you find something online you like, you may just be able to get it at the store without waiting on shipping.
- Walmart.com – Free shipping if you use the Site to Store option.
- ThinkGeek – Tons of unique geeky gadgets and clothing.
- Woot! – Only one item a day, but at a really good price.
How do you go about finding a gadget? What sites do you recommend visiting?

Great tips! And once I decide on a specific item, I like to do a Twitter search and check out a few coupon sites (RetailMeNot, CouponCabin, CheapTweet) to see if I can find a coupon for free shipping or an additional percent off. I almost always find something.
