gmail-logoThere have been many posts on using GMail as a feed reader. But, it just got better with the a new addition to the insanely successful GMail Labs – Multiple Inboxes. Upon enabling Multiple Inboxes for your account, you get multiple panes on your regular inbox, where you can set to display emails matching specific criteria. This, combined with the unlimited email address tweaks of GMail, provides a simple and efficient way to keep your GMail as the home for all your subscriptions.

How To Get Going

While subscribing to blogs/newsletters, use a custom email ID that is derived from your primary gmail ID (i.e. if your primary ID is myname[at]gmail, you could use something like myname+feed[at]gmail while subscribing to feeds).

Filtering Out Your Subscriptions

Once you’ve confirmed your subscription, create a filter in GMail with the following criteria.

  • to:myname+feed[at]gmail
  • Skip Inbox

Get Your Settings Right

Now, enable GMail labs (from settings) and then enable Multiple Inboxes from the list of available Labs features. By default, the multiple inboxes are spread horizontally, which will look ugly if you don’t have a widescreen. You can configure this and the number of multiple inboxes in the multiple inbox settings (located at General Settings).

Once in the settings add: “to:myname+feed[at]gmail” (sans quotes) to Pane 1 and select the maximum number of emails to be shown in each pane.

You’re done. The new mails/feeds/newsletters, will never again cause clutter in your cute inbox. They’ll all lie away from the regular mails, as they’ve all got a new home for themselves!
