Firefox’s Best Kept Secret Tip
Posted on 25. Aug, 2009 by Squealing.Rat in Browsers, Internet Tools

When I look at most Internet browsers, I always see the same thing. Toolbars. Toolbars are awesome. I use them, because they are accessible, easy, and quick. But one issue that many have with them is that they take up space. Not a whole lot, granted, but still space that could be used by say, reading one of your favorite blogs in full screen.
So, what’s the tip?
This is my browser, Firefox, before this tip.

And after.

Notice a difference? Essentially, I managed to combine the Bookmark toolbar and the Google toolbar into one. Pretty cool, huh? Let me show you how to do it.
How To
Go up to View, then click Toolbars, then Customize. Now, ignoring that window that just popped up, drag the Bookmarks from the Bookmarks toolbar to the space next to the Google Toolbar. You might have to make some room by getting rid of the titles of the bookmarks, and relying on the favicons as your pointers.
Second Best Secret Tip
You can search sites really really easily. Let me show you how.
Take a site that you would like to search, say Flickr.com. Click on the search box, right click on the box, then click on “Add a Keyword for this search”, then enter the keyword and name for the search. Now try it out by going to the “wonderful bar”, i.e. URL bar and type in the keyword followed by the search word.
For example, my keyword for Flickr was simply “f”, so I typed in “f tree” and would get the Flickr search for tree. If this explanation left you with a blank expression, take a look at this slideshow on how to complete this task:
Can’t see it? Visit the direct URL here.
There you have it. Two fantastic tools to use in your next exploration of the world wide web.

This one is quite amazing. I have not pondered on it until now and thanks for letting me know.
I would take a look at it.

I didn’t think it was even possible to combine the bookmarks bar and the google toolbar. This is good info. I really like firefox but it takes way too much vertical space
