Apple’s New OS Driving Innovation

Hot off the heels of Apple’s recent unveiling of their newly designed Macbooks and Macbook Pro series, Apple is experiencing an excellent 4 Qtr. With earnings higher then expected, Apple is looking at going into this Christmas season with guns blazing despite the economic recession.
Apple has always gone against the grain, and say what you will about their target market, they do have a way of making their products seem cool and chic. Taking advantage of Microsoft’s failed campaign to directly attack Apple, the company is poised to continue it’s drive towards innovation, and their new OS, Snow Leopard looks to be a start in the right direction.
What’s with the cat names? Who knows, someone inside Apple apparently has a cat thing going, but aside from the name, Apple is looking at redefining their OS development with upcoming advancements, and users are going to see the difference.
The first significant change will be that Apple is not looking at updating the features, OSX has already set the standard for purity in an OS, but rather the functionality of the OS itself. Specifically, Snow Leopard will take immediate and obvious advantage of the dual core processors inside the machine. Previous updates looked to integrate more use of the dual cores but ultimately felt sluggish and spotty, but this new update should clear up those issues.
The new streamlined process, called “Grand Central”, will work to spread the processes of the system more evenly across the multicores for faster performance. By making the system aware of the system’s multicore and allocating the tasks evenly, the users will see an OS that is quicker and sleeker then before. Apple states on it’s website, that developers will now be able to squeeze every ounce of power from the multicores that reside inside the the computers making it more advantageous to develop deeper, richer applications.
Along with the multi core innovation, Apple is also pushing the limit of the RAM. Apple is pushing the limits of the 64-bit technology to support “insane” amounts of ram. How much? Well, theoretically, almost 16 TB of ram. Apple sites that it will amount to 500 times what is possible right now. That will remain to be seen, and while the claim may seem unbelievable, Apple has always been known to surprise. For the user, more ram means faster programs, more intensive software can run seamlessly from the physical ram as opposed to the hard disk which can hamper the experience.
Next year will be an interesting year for Apple. After MacWorld Expo ’09 in January, just about every line will have received updates, and Snow Leopard will be prime and ready for release. Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to release.
