Video Games are for Dummies

I recently read an article at Tom’s Hardware that went into how video games must be dumbed down in order to have a mass appeal. The article was written about a lecture the creative director of BioShock had given. In this lecture, he talked about how BioShock was originally supposed to take place over almost a decade, but it had to be condensed into one day in order for all people to be able to follow it.
BioShock is one of my favorite games of all times, and I really enjoyed most of the story. BioShock is one of the first games I’ve ever played that I really felt like everything came together. This was an interesting article that showed there are ways to please many different types of gamers. The game strategically used “tapes” in order to tell more of the story to interested people, but the gamers that didn’t care could just skip over them. I wonder if in the future you will be able to play not only different levels of difficulty but different levels of story amount within the game. I am excited about the future of video games and their move towards having more depth and meaning than they have had in the past. At the end of the day, I love video games even without the message, but I look forward to the new and innovative games that are yet to come.
I recommend the article, as it is a great read (and you should, of course, play the game).

I think that, to some extent, it’s really easy to only access as much of the story as you want in most games. It’s possible to skip cut scenes in most games, and, often, the story can be ignored, except as required to complete your objectives. Some games go in a different direction with this, but, I think it’s usually already easy to only get as much story as you want.
