5 Great and Free First Person Shooter Games
Posted on 17. Jul, 2009 by Prasanth Chandra in Software
First-person shooter (FPS) is one of the best types of video games, in my opinion. As the name implies, the game revolves around the first person perspective. These games are mostly weapon based and involves quick reflexes and, of course, a lot of shooting.
There are lots of great FPS games out there, but we wanted to let you in on a few that we have found that are good and totally free!
Sauerbraten
Sauerbraten is a free cross-platform First Person Shooter. It is built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS game. The game has single player and multiplayer modes. Multiplayer functionality is possible with LAN, Local, and Internet play, which are available at its server listings from a master server. Single player mode features both episodic game play and also deathwatch with bots instead of human opponents over the Internet.
Dispatch of Army
Dispatch of Army is a multiple player FPS with a combat feel surrounding. It supports up to 32 players online and has 3 modes, which pass through jungles and different types of warfare.
Its features include maps with 15 jungle and urban warfare environments, realistic weapons from 60’s warfare, death match game play mode and 10 different characters.
Control Monger
Control Monger is a different online team based first person shooter where 255 players can play at a time. You have 7 player classes to choose from: repair, heavy, construction, sniper, demolition, soldier and spy bot. There are several different gametypes and maps, and it also supports customized maps.
Other features include advanced particle effects, advanced dynamic shadows, client side and dedicated servers and LAN support.
Tremulous
Tremulous is a team based FPS where players are allowed to choose their side, aliens or humans. It’s a unique FPS where weapons can be purchased and sold using in game credits.
Its features contain flexible particle system for visual effects, alien classes, human setup customization, flexible map system and a large weapons system. All of these features provide and unique and fun experience.
Nexuiz
Nexuiz is a fast paced FPS. There are multiple player game modes, which include team death match, capture the flag, domination. In single player mode, you have to fight through over 20 levels. That should keep you busy over the weekend.
Conclusion
There are many other free online FPS games out there, but we just wanted to cover a few that you maybe didn’t know about. Let us know in the comments about your favorite free FPS.

Americas Army is also free, professionally done, and available through Steam. Quake Online is another decent free FPS, and runs in a browser through a plugin.

Please leave your STEAM crap out of this discussion.
Freeware and STEAM should not be mentioned in the same sentence.

i have played most of these games whit some of my classmates when we don’t care to listen to the professor, and while tremulous where insanely fun for the first week it got very old very fast, Nexuiz is fun for a long time and lasted for 2 months.

I think a good one which im currently playin is Team Wolf, by Aeria games, you get to turn into a wolf at anytime.
My only complain though is that the automatic weapons are much to accurate and can sometimes be used as sniper rifles with the proper upgrades… almost makes the normal sniper rifle obsolete.
