7zip logoUp until a few years ago, WinZIP was just about the only file archiver I used, but that all changed when I found a free alternative in 7-Zip.  It doesn’t change the formula of traditional file archivers too much, but it does improve performance and is free.

Packing and Unpacking

Lots of times a paid software will have better options and better compatibility than a free software, but this just isn’t true in the case of 7-Zip.

7-Zip supports:

  • Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR
  • Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB, NSIS

User Interface

7-Zip has the same basic user interface as most archive programs.  It is easy to navigate, and the learning curve is almost nonexistent for anyone that has used file archive software in the past.

Keyboard Shortcuts

I like to think of myself as a wannabe keyboard ninja.  I work hard to not use the mouse, because I’m on a laptop.  This makes one of the requirements for me to love a software be that it is well equipped with keyboard shortcuts.  7-Zip is great when it comes to this.  Almost every option in the menus has a keyboard shortcut.  Also, the shortcut list isn’t hidden away somewhere, instead the shortcuts are displayed right on the menu making it easy to learn them.

Conclusion

7-Zip is a great free program that is definitely worth checking out.  What other file archivers does everyone use?

I’ve used 7zip in the past but have been using Alzip for awhile now! It offers the same type of functionality.
