swiss-army-knifeI love freeware, and I love the fact that there seems to be a freeware for just about everything you can think of doing in Windows.  The problem is that I don’t like having tons of applications all around my computer.  Well, Capture.Net is a great piece of software that will take the place of many other freewares you may already use.  Capture.Net makes a pretty strong claim, calling themselves the Swiss Army Knife of PCs.

What Does it Offer?

Screen Capture

This allows you to take screenshots of your computer just like any screenshot tool out there while allowing you to choose between capturing the whole screen, a region or using the freehand tool to draw around the area you want to capture. When you’re done, the screenshot will automatically open in the bundled image editor allowing you to save the screenshot.

Color Picker

The Color Picker could come in handy for web and Graphic designers helping you reveal the details of any color including a wand tool you can use to pick any color on any window on your desktop, and it will immediately show you its details

Privacy Eraser

Allows you to list and choose which cookies you want to delete.  It also lets you empty the recycle bin, temporary files, my recent documents, clipboard and application history among many other options to keep you safe and secure which makes it a very useful app on your thumb drive

Font Viewer

This catalogs all your fonts and allows you to preview them in real time.

Converter

Converter works more like an image converter since that seems to be the only thing you’ll be using it for, and it allows you to convert any image into another format like Gif, Bmp, Tif, Jpeg and Png.

Angle Tool

Pretty cool way to help you perfectly align stuff or know the angle between two points.  It fits pretty well with the ruler tool bundled with Capture.Net.

Calendar and Clock

This is a replacement for your default calendar and clock that sits on your desktop until you tell them to go to the tray. The clock also has an alarm feature which could be useful if you’re taking a nap next to your computer

Post It

You can add post it notes on your desktop or on certain applications using the new note option or edit already added ones.

Tweaker

This is a bit of an advanced tool which might convince some people to download the Capture.Net tool. The Tweaker basically allows you to tweak your system settings and some of the registry keys related to some applications as well as some other settings like the name of the computer.  It also gives you access to system info and such. A nice addition, quite frankly.

Quick Launch

This is a place where you can add tools to Capture.Net and shortcuts to programs and commands on your PC.  I used it to add an onscreen keyboard that can be easily accessed by right clicking on the tray icon of Capture.Net and choosing Quick Launch > on screen keyboard.

Options

The options of the program are available via right clicking on the tray icon of the program or the program’s window itself.  In the options, you can customize the program’s look and behavior like opacity and color. The setup gives you access to more detailed and advanced settings like setting a password on Capture.Net or adding stuff to your Quick Launch.

Conclusion

If you want to give it a try, just head on to your favorite freeware site and give it a download. The download size is roughly 670 Kb and it downloads as a zip file. The Zip file contains the Capture.Net executable which is pretty nice so you won’t need any installation or anything to run it.

Generally speaking, I think 670Kb isn’t much to throw on your USB and run every time you feel the need to tweak some stuff on your system or feel like getting a few things done without downloading anything. They say its the Swiss Army Knife of PCs and I guess they’re right. It does give you a lot of tools that slide into one small 670 Kb executable. What do you think? Is it something you’d keep on your thumbdrive?
