lastpassManaging many passwords over the Internet is a big hassle if you are registered at a lot of places. Not only does it become hard to think of new passwords, it also becomes even harder to keep them secure and remember them.

In these situations, most people are forced into using the same password for multiple websites which can be much less secure than having several strong passwords. This can be easily avoided using a password manager. A password manager needs us to remember only a master password, which can be used to access login information for all user accounts.

The most important thing while using a password manager is to check for features, otherwise it becomes similar to saving passwords in a password protected document. Almost all browsers have a password manager nowadays, but this application makes an optimal password manager.

LastPass is a free application with many options making password management super easy.  In addition to LastPass as just a software application, you can also use the LastPass Firefox extension if you prefer.

There are some unique features in LastPass making it the best password manager.

Options and Preferences

LastPass has plenty of features which can be customized from the preferences dialogue. We can set LastPass to log out every time we close the browser, login every time we start Firefox, logout after a certain amount of time and so on. Options for autofilling username and password fields are also present. LastPass needs you to have a LastPass identity to save and use passwords. The ID can be created for free from the LastPass website.

Password Generator

The password generator in LastPass is very powerful. It lets us generate secure passwords with many options. The length of the password can be set to a maximum of 100 characters. The character set to be used is ASCII and can be customized to use all caps, all small letters, mixed case and the number of numerals in the password can also be selected. A green bar below the password indicates it’s strength. The generated password can be directly copied to the clipboard. This Password Generator can be brought up by pressing Alt+G.

Highly Detailed Profile Management

There is a highly detailed profile manager in LastPass. This  lets us create a profile that will be filled out at registration forms. The profile can be saved easily and can be used to fill up registration information with a single click.

Password Vault

The password vault has a list of sites you save in the LastPass vault. The sites can be arranged in folders and organized for a better view and usage.  The unique feature of LastPass is that on clicking a site from the password vault, we can directly go to the login page for that site with our login details filled up and already requested. This makes LastPass the best password manager.
