Monitor Your Bandwidth Usage with NetworX
Posted on 14. Dec, 2009 by Sourojit in Software
If you have an internet connection with a bandwidth limit and often fail to stay within limits due to lack of awareness of how much bandwidth you have used, you might feel the need for a good software to analyze and keep track of your Internet usage. NetworX is a free, simple, light weight and powerful tool that can evaluate your bandwidth usage.
Apart from measuring your bandwidth usage, it can also measure the speed of your network connection, identify possible sources of network problems and can also track suspicious network activity of Trojan horses and hacker attacks.
Now, let us take a look on services provided by NetworX.
Getting Started and Basic Features
Installing NetworX and running the application brings up a usage report window, which can be set for any user if you have multiple users on your system or for all users combined. There are reports for hourly, daily, weekly and monthly usage. There is also an option for customized viewing which shows Internet usage in between dates specified by you.
These reports can be saved for future reference, and they can be backed up to prevent any data loss. NetworX can also import third-party application data files like DU Meter backup files and NetMeter log files.
Additional Features
Other useful features and applications like graph, speed meter, usage statistics, quota, trace route, ping, netstat can be accessed by right-clicking NetworX on system tray, which brings up the program menu.

Show Graph
This option toggles the network load graph. Opacity for this window can be increased or decreased using + or – numpad keys.
Speed Meter
It is used to measure data transfer rate in a particular interval of time. The current transfer rate is computed as an average of the last 5 seconds. The collected data will remain visible until you click the reset counters button.
Usage Statistics
This option brings up general usage report window; this window is the same as discussed earlier.
Quota
This option is very helpful for setting up a limit on bandwidth usage, on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. When you go over the quota a warning message is displayed. This feature of NetworX helps you in restricting yourself or other users from exceeding their bandwidth limit.
Trace Route
Helps in determining the path that packet data is taking over the network.
Ping
Sends an echo request to address specified by you.
Netstat
Here you can see list of all active network applications and hence stop unwanted applications from slowing the Internet.
Settings
Here you can customize options like the network adapter to monitor, graph opacity, notifications etc. You can even use a password to lock these settings.
Conclusion
NetworX has earned its reputation among other network monitoring tools due to its accurate service, simple interface and small size at no price.

This looks like a very valuable piece of software. I like how you mention that it can show you suspicious network activity as well. I always wonder about this on my home network.
I will have to check this out for the PC. Is there a Mac version?
