Best Free Remote Desktop Alternatives

I often have to travel a lot between my home city, and my university which are more than 300 miles apart. On top of that, I don’t carry around a notebook or a netbook (I don’t even want to get in the discussion of why) so I usually have a tough time when I want something from one of my computers at home while I’m at the university.

Sure I do use cloud storage for important files, but sometimes we need more than just files and data, like for example, I might want to make some changes to my Home Server which is only accessible through the PCs on my Home network.

In these types of situations, I turn to a Remote Desktop Connection program which allows me to connect to my PC from anywhere in the world as long as I have Internet. It even works on the iPhone. Windows has a Remote Desktop Connection solution built into it, but we will be looking at the alternatives.

60 Search Engine Alternatives to Google

When it comes to search engines, Google is the first one that comes to our minds. There seems to be nothing it can’t find. Okay, except for the meaning of life and other important questions, perhaps. But mostly it can find everything that inhabits the Internet. “Are there alternatives?”, one would ask. Just like children ask their parents, if they can find their recommended amount of B vitamins anywhere else than in spinach.

Well, yes there are. Even if it sounds impossible that there are websites that can do something better than the praised search engine that invented a verb, they exist. At least 60, as a matter of fact. Of course, Google is able to help you with music, photos, shopping, movies, videos and so on, but other services can do it more efficiently.

real player bubbleI’m sure that most of your have dealt with RealPlayer at some point, and I don’t have to tell you that RealPlayer is a big piece of junk.  It is slow, bulky and annoying.  Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to play RealMedia and RealAudio files without RealPlayer?

Well, there is such a way!  Real Alternative is a free codec that lets you play RealMedia with RealPlayer nowhere in sight.  The Real Alternative codec works with just about any media player, but it does come with Media Player Classic.

The following Real formats are supported by the Real Alternative Codec.

  • RealAudio (.ra .rpm)
  • RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil)
  • RealText (.rt)
  • ReadPix (.rp)

Unless you like Media Player Classic, I would suggest downloading Real Alternative Lite.  It is the same as the normal version, but it doesn’t come with Media Player Classic.
