I use Gmail and Thunderbird, but I have stored all of my contacts on Thunderbird instead of Gmail. This never caused a problem until I started getting more and more into social networks.
Often, social networking sites will allow you to connect to your Gmail in order to see if any of your contacts are using that social network already. I found myself a little sad that I couldn’t just import my Thunderbird contacts.
