I’m sure everyone here knows that BitTorrent is one of the most popular digital content delivery networks out there. The Peer to Peer distribution technology amounts for nearly 30% of the total web traffic and is used by a number of leading corporations, movie studios and media outlets including 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, Spike TV, MTV, Netgear and D-Link.

Here at Lost in Technology, we have covered torrent related topics in great detail including tips on how to make torrents, open ports, optimize bandwidth utilization and improve speeds. Today, I’m going to share a neat trick which lets you setup custom RSS feeds for your favorite torrent clients which allows you to control your client from anywhere in the world.

Creating the Feed

The first question that would pop up in anyone’s mind is that why would I need to setup custom RSS feeds for my torrent client? Well think about this scenario. You are on a business trip and want to download the latest release of OpenOffice on your PC hundreds of miles back home. Sure you can setup a Web UI for your torrent client but that’s a difficult task for someone who doesn’t have a static IP or isn’t sure even if his PC would be on or off when he’s trying to access it.

The simple solution would be to setup a custom RSS Feed and set your client to download everything from that feed as soon as you add content to it. Now you can just pop in a torrent file into your custom feed from anywhere in the world where you have internet access (even your cell phone) and your PC back home would download the stuff automagically whenever it comes online.

Sounds simple right? It is. And here’s how you can set it up for your self.

• Head over to ReactorFeed and create a new Free account. If you already have an account with ShareReactor then you can skip this step.
• Log in to the account you just created and you should already see a feed setup for you. For this tutorial, we’ll go ahead and use this feed in our client.
• Copy the feed URL and open up your BitTorrent client, like uTorrent for example.

• Now paste the Feed URL into the box and give the feed a custom name if you like.
• Select Automatically download all items published in feed and uncheck the Smart Episode filter.
• Hit OK and your new feed is all setup.

Now whenever you add a new item to your RSS feed, your client would automatically download it whenever it gets an update. In order to add custom items to your feed, you just have to:

• Log in to ReactorFeed and click Add item on the feed you want to add items too.
• Paste the URL of the download file and click the Add button.
• Your client should automatically detect the feed and start the download in a few moments.

And that’s all there is to it. A simple yet powerful way to setup remote downloading of all the content you like without the hassle of setting up a Web UI interface.

Google is constantly trying to better their products. To enhance the functionality of their internet browser, Chrome, Google has released a number of extensions that complement the browser. Many of these extensions integrate many of Google’s existing services into Chrome. For example, there is a Google extension for Gmail which places an icon in the address bar showing the number of unread messages. A similar Google extension exists for Google Reader.

These extensions are quite helpful for a person who is using one of these services. But if somebody is using both services, then installing these extensions can create an unwanted clutter in the address bar.

Recognizing this, a third-party developer has combined the functionality of these extensions, added a few more functions, and created what is called One Number.

Overview

One Number is a great Chrome extension which is a must-have for internet users who use multiple Google services. This extension places an icon in the address bar which shows the collective number of unread messages in Gmail, Google Reader, Voice, and Wave. For a breakdown of unread messages (i.e. which service has how many unread messages) all a user has to do is hover the mouse pointer over the icon and a text cloud appears with the details.

If you notice an ERROR message then it either means that you have zero unread messages for that service or you are not using that particular Google service.

Users can also click on the icon and be presented shortcuts to these services in a drop down window.

Amongst other adjustments, we can access the extension’s options to reduce the number of services checked by One Number or change its color scheme.

Conclusion

One Number is truly a greatly creative extension that will facilitate countless Google users. Try it out today and personally experience how it makes managing all of your Google services that much easier.

We all remember the beginning of Twitter, right? Before there were tweets, retweets, tweeters, and tweeps? And now, there is a new kid on the block: Buzz. Buzz, by Google, is slowly becoming quite popular. But, being so new, no “buzzwords” (no pun intended) have been officially christened. I thought I’d lay out the new buzzwords for Buzz.

1. Buzz n- The current news on Buzz. The buzz today is all about Tiger Woods.

2. Buzz v- (buzzing, buzzed, buzz) The act of updating to Buzz. I just buzzed about our new baby. He was buzzing constantly about his unbelievable luck. I buzz daily about my personal life.

3. Buzzer n- a user of Buzz. Everyone was talking about the buzzer who took a picture of Steve Jobs using Microsoft Word.

4. Sting n- a particular update that was widely talked about, an attention grabber. Did you see that sting about Obama that Gizmodo buzzed? What a zinger!

5. Boz/Buzz (used interchangeably)  n- an update on Buzz. Leo’s buzz explained the what he like about the service while King’s boz was more negative.

6. Outbuzzed adj- an update on Buzz that was flooded with comments, making it desirable to mute. Boy, Gina’s latest boz was outbuzzed.

7. Unbuzz v- to stop following on buzz. I had to unbuzz him because of his constant barrage of buzzes.

To sum up, buzzers who buzz on Buzz will occasionally see stings, but for the most part, buzzers will see bozes and and outbuzzed buzzes which may cause them to unbuzz those people.

Have you ever wanted to have more than one user on a Twitter account?  This is probably the case if you have a business Twitter account that many people in the organization can use.  You could just share the password around to all the users on the account, but this isn’t the best solution.

Today, I’m going to tell you about two applications that will make sharing a Twitter account much easier.

CoTweet

CoTweet is a great web-based application to share your Twitter account with multiple users. This sharing allows everyone to tweet from the same Twitter account.

Features

CoTweet allows you to manage up to six Twitter accounts with one CoTweet accounts. You can manage as many users on a Twitter account as you want, but they all have to have accounts with CoTweet.

From your CoTweet dashboard, you can monitor current trends and keywords on Twitter. Not only that, you can assign other CoTweet users tweets to follow up on.  This can help spread out the workload of answering questions about your business on Twitter.

Assigning a fellow twitter user.

With CoTweet, you can view live statistics of the links tweeted from the accounts associated with your CoTweet account. CoTweet shortens links using the bit.ly URL shortener which has statistics options. CoTweet utilizes this and brings the statistics on your dashboard so that you don’t have to go elsewhere.

You can schedule tweets using CoTweet.  This helps you keep a consist flow of tweets, so you never overwhelm your followers. There is a lot more to discover on CoTweet. For everything else, head to CoTweet and sign up now.

Birdherd

This Twitter client provides a simpler way to allow multiple users onto one Twitter account.  If you don’t need all those complex-yet-useful features that CoTweet provides, your alternative choice should be Birdherd which is — in short — simple, fast, and smart.

Using Birdherd is simple. You and everyone that you want to access a certain Twitter account all need to have accounts with Birdherd. Once you all have accounts, you can associate several users under one Twitter account.

To add more users to the account, just enter their Birdherd usernames.  It’s really basic and simple, but it gets the job done.

Conclusion

The two apps reviewed above are still in beta version, so you may encounter some bugs along the way. However, if your organization or business is literally big, you are recommended to use CoTweet instead of BirdHerd, as CoTweet is perfect for bigger handling.

Here are some of the best crowd sourced applications.

iPhone Applications

Waze

I recently discovered Waze and loved it. Basically, Waze is a free iPhone application that aims to deliver free turn by turn directions. When you are out on a drive, simply launch the application and leave it running. The application uses your GPS to map road directions and other information. If you run into traffic, you can enter that into the application, and it will use that information to prevent others from being stuck in that jam. Can’t visualize it? GasBag

GasBag is an application that I have been using for a while. I was drawn to it for the simple reason of price.  The application is free (other apps do the same thing for $5). GasBag allows you to record gas station prices and log your gas purchases. I love this application because at a moments notice, when the gas tank is low, I can look up the cheapest gas in the area. Every time you get gas, make sure to enter in the gas prices of the station for the benefit of you and others.

Web Applications

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a website that is known far and wide as a source of information. Boasting a community that knows nearly everything, Wikipedia is a website of collective knowledge that spans over 14 million articles. Submit your knowledge and receive the satisfaction of knowing you are helping educate the public.

Amazon Reviews

Amazon is one of the largest online stores on the internet. But the truly amazing thing about Amazon is not the products, the prices or even the storage. It is the unbelievably vast collection of reviews that talk about products and allow customers to make the best choice when purchasing something. After you purchase something on Amazon, take a minute to give your opinion of it so that others know what to buy and don’t waste their money.

ReCaptcha

ReCaptcha is the stone that kills two birds at the same time. ReCaptcha prevents robots from spamming systems and helps convert scanned books to text. Surely you have tried to sign up for an account at some point and had to type in characters in an image. The focus of that annoying step is to prevent robots from spamming a site by creating an image only a human can identify. ReCaptcha uses words from attempted books scans that the computer couldn’t convert as words to use for the captcha. So every time you fill in one of the somewhat annoying forms, know that you are helping books get converted.

Google Image Labeler

The Google Image Labeler is a tool that benefits search, not just for Google, but for everyone that likes the ability to find what they are looking for fast. In what Google calls a game, you observe images with a cyber-buddy, tagging them in hopes that what both parties tagged will be the same. For every tag that both get, your points add up. This addicting “service” helps Google with their image search and you to get a high score.

Aardvark

Aardvark, written about previously, is a service that helps you find the answers to your questions. A different take on the normal question and answer service, Aardvark uses IM to allow you to chat with your answerers. The service also attempts to get answers to you from reliable people, send questions to others that have tagged their profile to answer those types of questions. Panoramio

Here’s a little known fact: Google Street View is not just comprised of images from the Google Street View mobile. In fact, Google shows other images as well (just check the box under more that says images).  Those images, for the most part, are from Google’s little known Panoramio, a service that accepts user generated photos that included location information. Google integrated those photos with Google Maps for a truly crowd sourced photo walk.

Computer Applications

Folding@Home

Folding@Home is a application you can download that takes full advantage of crowd sourcing. Folding@Home creates a network of computers that come together to form a super computer that is used to solve complex problems and try and use knowledge of the computers to help science and knowledge. When you download the application, you agree to donate your computer’s free CPUs to the program, so that when you are not using your computer, it can use it. But Folding@home is not the only application out there of its kind. Here are several others:SETI@home, Rosetta@home, Einstein@Home, and Astropulse.

*Flickr has started a cool game to encourage people to tag photos with locations here.

Suppose it’s Wednesday night, you get out of work and the radio forecasts heavy rain. You only want to go home and watch a movie. But the day was tough and you don’t even know which one; you don’t want to even think of it. You stop at the video club and start asking the employees about “nice movies” you might watch tonight. Of course, the guy that works there doesn’t even know you nor the things you might like. So he decides to suggest the first movie that comes to his mind. You pay for it, go home and watch the first fifteen minutes of an incredibly boring story. You go to bed angry at life and money spent for a movie you do not even watch.

Luckily, a bunch of people that like Internet, media, and movies (among other things) decided to start what they call “The First Taste Engine”. Assuming that the usual keywords and genres are not able to fully define a movie.

Jinni is a film database and social networking site which not only separates its entries by genre or usual keywords. It presents a new way of classifying movies. The browsing criteria includes mood, plot, genres, time/period, place, audience, and praise. Sometimes you are not 100% sure of what you want to see, however, you have some idea. The search engine allows flexible searches according to a wide variety of keywords and situations. There is an interesting keyword: “like:”, which would correspond to saying “I would like to see a movie like (e.g.) Star Wars”.

Search Engine

Featured searches include “tough heroic mission with special effects”, bringing up results like The Matrix, The Dark Knight, Casino Royale, and Band of Brothers. I was amazed with some of them, which included, for example, “love triangle with Kirsten Dunst” (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Get over it, Lover’s Prayer, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People) or “indie road movie” (Little Miss Sunshine, Transamerica, Harold Kumar go to White Castle, The Straight Story).

The results for every search are displayed in a mosaic of film thumbnails, which are sized according to relevance. The site is still in Beta version, and sometimes not all the keywords will bring up results. In the following screenshot, the keywords “Michael Douglas going crazy” has no results, however, as in every search engine, by reducing or generalizing a little bit, interesting results can be obtained. To be noticed how “King of California” is the biggest square on the mosaic, and everyone who has seen that movie will know that this is correct. Every movie has its own page with cast, plot description, keywords, thumbnails, clips, similar movies, and critics/users reviews.

Story Tuner is an additional feature that allows the user to further describe the kind of story he/she is looking for: little/well known, realistic/fantastic, light/serious, slow/fast. Search results can be shared with your friends.

Getting Started

One of the main aspects of Jinni, is the aim to be a social network. By creating an account, friends with similar movie interests can share, rate and watch their favorite movies, and get recommendations based on their preferences via Movie Genome. Movie Genome is a project that intends to provide users the ability to match their personal tastes and moods. The site can also be followed in Facebook, Twitter and StumbleUpon, for those social networking fans.

Confguring your likes

Registering is free for everyone. In order to receive accurate suggestions that match your likes, there are four ways to start discovering new films:

• Using the search engine to find interesting new suggestions
• There is a Movie Personality Test that can be filled in in order to jumpstart your personal recommendations
• Simply start watching complete TV episodes, films, clips and trailers
• Inviting your friends to share and discuss recommendations and compare tastes.

A thing that might discourage the user is that there aren’t many episodes available yet. However, this problem might be solved by linking the user’s account with Netflix, which is a service that has been around a little longer. Jinni’s administrators have mentioned that a Wiki is on its way. We will have to wait and see the full potential of a site that seems very appealing to movie lovers on the net.

In only a few years Google has become the king of the Web. It went from a college research project to the most popular search engine that rakes in billions of dollars every year. They’ve expanded to mobile, OSs and, in the past few days, promising the fastest broadband Internet to thousands of homes in the States.

We use the Google search engine on a daily basis, but Google has lots of other great services out there.  Recently, we talked about 5 Great and Unknown Google Products.  I want to dive back into that topic and share a few more services that Google has going that you should know about.

The List

1. Aardvark

Aardvark is a social search service that finds people who can answer all of your questions. When you submit your inquiry, Aardvark searches your circle of friends and finds someone who can answer your question. The answer is sent to your IM, or you can check it on your Aardvark profile. The service was bought on February 11th, so just a few days ago.

2. Sets

Google Sets is a simple service that creates sets of items from a few examples you give. Simple indeed, but extremely fun. Let’s say you want a list of popular TV shows. All you have to do is insert two or three shows you know and Google will predict the rest. Voila, you have at least 15 other TV shows listed.

3. Audio Indexing

Let’s say you really want to know in what videos your favorite topic is mentioned. Google Audio Indexing is a technology that scrutinizes all the audio in YouTube videos. While it is only for politics now, the service will probably get expanded in the future.

4. News Timeline

How does news change through time? See it on the Google News Timeline.  Results are shown in a timeline, with articles, videos and photos.

5. Living Stories

While major newspapers are not available in News Timeline, Google got together with The NY Times and The Washington Post in order to bring us Google Living Stories. This service shows news that is designed for the online environment. Stories are covered completely with all development gathered in one place.

6. City Tours

If you’re planning to visit a big city and don’t know where to go sightseeing, go to Google City Tours and enter your starting address. The search engine will generate the best itinerary, telling you the time you will spend and draw you a route to follow for every day of your vacation.

7. Image Swirl

After Bing announced Visual Search, Google decided to strike back with Image Swirl. Images are organized in groups (swirls) based on their similarity (whether visual or semantic). For instance, if you are looking for a jaguar, Google will organize the results in swirls: the car, the cat, logo. Additionally, images are organized by their angle, colors and so on.

8. Dictionary

Sure, you can find dictionaries all over the web, but Google Dictionary provides you with a little extra.  When you search for a word, it gives you a definition, a phonetic transcription, synonyms, related phrases, related languages (if the word appears in other languages as well) and web definitions. Oh, and if possible, they give you a photo.

9. Squared

Squared is one of the niftiest services on Google, regardless of how simple it might seem. Let’s say you’re looking for landmarks in London. Squared creates a table with names, images, descriptions, locations and telephone numbers, but it doesn’t stop here. You can add your own columns: opening times, height, when they were constructed.  The possibilities are almost unlimited. In case the list does not exist, you can help them and add it.

10. Fast Flip

If you love news and you like to get it online, but don’t have enough time to check all the news websites, use Fast Flip.

Conclusion

I immersed myself in Google alternatives a few months ago, because I wanted to see what Google has to offer. I was very surprised at what I found. Google is really more than just a search engine.  They are constantly trying to make your online experiences better.  Many of the services mentioned are in beta, but they are all worth checking out.

Ever wanted to throw a site up quickly, easily and cheaply? Perhaps for a school project, a business meeting or a knowledge base? There are 4 ways, varying from highly customizable, to unbelievably easy.

All of the following are very easy to set up and do not require use of coding. Let me take you through them.

1. iWeb/Komponzer/Dreamweaver

This option, without a doubt, is the most easily customizable. You can start from scratch, and work your way into a finished web page that looks exactly how you want it to look. No compromises.

I use iWeb, in part because it is aesthetically pleasing and because it came with my computer. I normally start out with a blank page, so I can build up my site exactly the way I want it, creating a “template” page, then duplicating it for the rest of the site. Dreamweaver and Kompozer are other options for PC and Linux. The great thing about these three options is that no coding is required, otherwise known as a what-you-see-is-what-you-get web editor (WYSIWYG).

The costs for this option, are unfortunately, the highest. iWeb comes with your Mac, but you must pay $79 for the upgrade to the latest version. If you use a PC, you can use Dreamweaver, which costs a whopping $400 or Kompozer which is free. In addition, you must have hosting, ranging from $60-$100 a year (I use Dreamhost). You must also purchase a domain name which costs about $8 a year.

Total: $70-$510

2. Tumblr/Posterous/Wordpress.com

I use Tumblr, in part because it looks so good, with so many templates for customization. Tumblr is excellent for a site that you will update a lot, perhaps collaborating with others infrequently. It also hosts audio clips, which is a nice touch.

The costs for this option are minimal. Tumblr, which is free to use, offers free custom domain hosting, something which Posterous does too, but Wordpress.com doesn’t do for free. While they offer a free sub-domain (i.e. lostintechnology.tumblr.com), for the professional edge, (even though a Tumblr logo is displayed on the bottom) a $8 a year domain name is great.

Total: Free-$8

3. Wordpress.org/MovableType

If you think you will be collaborating with others on the site and have hosting, this is a great option. I use Wordpress, which is excellent for collaboration and stability. It does have some compromises: the look of your site is dictated by the free themes available, and the defaults display a thanks to Wordpress and the theme.Wordpress, however, does offer may free plugins, which can increase what your site does.

Wordpress and MoveableType are free to use, but do require hosting ($60- $100 a year). A domain is also needed.

Total: $70-$110

4. Google Sites/Webs

Google Sites is a cheap, easy option for collaboration. Bearing in mind that it is one of the least customizable, this is a good option for a class project. In addition, this option will plug itself on your site.

Google Sites and Webs are both free to use, and you do get a free sub-domain, a domain name is an added plus.

Total: Free- $8

Lets start with the big gun. PopURLs is one of the most popular social media and news aggregators on the planet. What makes it different from the rest of the picks for today is that it is a Single Page Aggregator. This means all the news, blog posts, photos and videos from the top sources on the web are displayed right on the main page. Users can also customize the layout according to their preferences by moving content boxes from different sources.

FARK

Fark is another news aggregator which operates differently from the normal pack. While users can submit news and content to Fark, only the stories approved by the moderators appear on the site. This ensures content quality without limiting the service to a fixed set of sources. TweetMeme

TweetMeme is a link aggregator for Twitter. It doesn’t take a genius to guess that most of the content these days gets shared on Twitter. TweetMeme analyzes all the links which are shared with it and ranks them based on their popularity. The links are broken down into a hierarchy of categories, sub-categories and channels, making it easy for users to discover stuff based on their interest.

Alltop

Alltop is portmanteau All Topics, is an “Online Magazine Rack”. The name pretty much indicates that Alltop is a web aggregator with humungous catalog of categories. Its makes easy to find the latest and hot content in whatever category you want. Science, Technology, Babies, Britney Spears, whatever you want, there are literally hundreds of categories to look from.
