Has it ever happened to you that you were doing something really important or you have been working on it for months and then, one fine evening, your thee year old son pressed that button which makes irrecoverable changes to your months of sleeplessness? Besides feeling miserable and annoyed, one thing you wish is, only if I locked my keyboard/mouse, this would not have happened. Well, thank yourself if you have not landed in such a situation as you will not in the future as well.

Today, we will talk about two apps that can be used to lock the keyboard or mouse when the need arises.

Toddler Keys

Toddler keys is a powerful utility that lets you lock down the keyboard, mouse, power-button and the CD-drive. This software comes in extremely handy in making your computer child-proof and accident-proof.

The lock can be set to go on automatically if inactive for a certain time and the unlock phrase can be changed as well. This gives the utility some flexibility.

The developer puts the software in the simplest possible words saying,

It is a useful tool for parents that allows you to lock your computer keyboard, CD drive doors and power-off button. When the keyboard is used it will display images and play sounds every time a key is pressed, thereby preventing access to the desktop and applications, while adding some entertainment value for the kid. You can select the images and sounds to be used by copying them to the Toddler Keys folder. To exit the locked screen, just type the word QUIT.

The software works for both Windows 7 and Windows XP. Download Toddler keys here.

Kid Key Lock

Kid Key Lock is another software that does the same thing as Toddler keys. I have used this software extensively, and it has saved me on more than once.  The software is extremely small, needs very little memory and does not slow down the system. It has individual controls for blocking specific buttons of the mouse and like Toddler, it requires a password to unlock. Another feature of Kid Key lock is that it can be added to the startup items list.

It is fairly easy to use and allows access through the right click context menu. The utility lies on the system tray and is a lifesaver. Download Kid Key Lock here.

Verdict

Finally, I would say that while Kid Key Lock is good and does what we want with efficiency, Toddler is another prospective alternative and is worth a try. I will still personally stick to using Kid Key Lock.
