Zipping and compressing files is a necessary action just about everyday. It is a great way to save space or send a file over email that is very large. Today, we are going to cover 5 great and free compression programs that will help you save that extra space.

jZip
jZip is a free and easy to use compression utility which is based on the 7-Zip archiving technology. It comes packed with an elegant and powerful user interface.
It enables you to create, open and extract Zip, TAR, GZip and 7-Zip files. You can open and extract files from RAR and ISO files as well. jZip is free of any adware, spyware and pop-ups and is available for both personal and enterprise use.
FreeZip
FreeZip is an effective utility for compression and decompression of files. It can be installed with one click and there are no complicated options or settings involved, thence its easy to use. It integrates with the Windows explorer and uses file associations and context menus to zip or unzip files and subdirectories.
ZipGenius
ZipGenius is a free compression tool available for personal, enterprise and commercial usage. It provides support for over 20 different formats of compressed archives. It integrates into the Windows shell and enables you to open multiple archives simultaneously in tabs with drag-and-drop support.
It also offers Pocket PC support via ActiveSync. You can also send archives via e-mail and publish your files and archives on the web via FTP and TWAIN devices.

PeaZip is an open source cross platform file and archive manager. It’s available as portable and installable software for 32 and 64 bit Windows (9x, 2k, XP, Vista) and Linux. It handles a wide range of compressed file formats, including ZIP, TAR, ARC, RAR and others.
It enables you to apply powerful multiple search filters to archive’s content. You can create and extract multiple archives at once. You can also save archive’s layouts, folders and bookmark archives. It allows you scan and open with custom applications compressed and uncompressed files. 7-Zip
7-Zip is an effective open source compression software with a powerful file manager and an incredible compression ratio. It integrates with the Windows shell and has self-extracting capability for 7z format.
It’s key features being, high compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression and a wide range of supported formats for packing and unpacking files. 7-Zip is compatible with Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista and there is also a port of the command line version to Linux/Unix.

I personally use and like 7-Zip. I feel that it can handle all zipping needs and works very quickly.
