Do you use several different computers that aren’t your own? Do you hate that every computer isn’t just like yours? I definitely do, because I am extremely picky about the programs I run on my computer. PortableApps provides you with a great solution to take all of your favorite software with you on just a USB drive.
With PortableApps, you can carry individual applications or a set of applications with all your personal settings and data on a USB drive and use them on any Windows computer.
What is a PortableApp?
As the website for PortableApps states,
A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows Computer. When your USB flash drive, portable hard drive or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug the device, none of your personal data is left behind.
In short, every computer you log on to can now be just like your computer.
The Possibilities
Having all of your applications makes your life much easier by giving you the ability to:
- Carry your web browser with all your favorite bookmarks.
- Carry your email client with all your contacts and settings.
- Carry your instant messenger and your buddy list.
- Carry your anti-virus program and other computer utilities.
- Carry all your important passwords and account information securely.
The Variety of Applications
PortableApps comes with all of the Internet, office, music, video and utilities you could possibly need. Some of the highlights are:
- Mozilla Firefox
- Pidgin Portable
- Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition
- OpenOffice.org Portable
- VLC Media Player Portable
- 7-Zip Portable
You can see the entire list of PortableApps here. Each of those applications has a well sustained forum and a support page including Live Chat associated with it.
PortableApps Suite
In addition to carrying just individual applications, you can also use the PortableApps Suite which is a complete collection of commonly used applications including a backup utility and integrated menu, all pre-configured to work portably. More portable apps can be added to the suite if you desire. Works with any external storage device!. You can download it from here.

Conclusion
The PortableApps Suite and individual applications are free and contain no spyware or advertisements. It isn’t a limited or trial version, so you have complete control of your applications just like at your home computer. If you carry a USB drive around, PortableApps is a must have.

I’ve been a big fan of this for a year or more. Originally I used it in conjunction with Truecrypt to keep my stick secure but after taking possesion of a nice shiny Cruzer Titanium I’ve found it happily coexists with U3. You can even convert the portable apps you use a lot to U3 (so that you don’t have to launch the Portable Apps launchpad all the time) using ‘Shortcut Creator 4U3′.
