QTTabBar: Tab Browsing for Windows Explorer
Posted on 08. Oct, 2009 by Aminul Islam Sajib in Software, Windows
Ever wanted the tab browsing feature of Firefox, Internet Explorer 8, or Google Chrome in your Windows Explorer? I know I have. Most of the time, we need to open multiple folders in different windows in order to move files around. As a result, the windows get cluttered and slow down your work process.
Well, as with most computer or software problems, there is a solution. QTTabBar makes exploring Windows folders easier than ever before. Let’s take a look at all the amazing features of this cool little tool.
Features
Here is a brief description of all the features that QTTabBar provides to you that make your dealing with Windows explorer faster, more comfortable and much easier.
Tab Browsing
This is what makes QTTabBar special. When the add-in is active, you can simply open as many tabs as you want in a single window while exploring files and folders in your hard drive.

Drop-Down Browsing
Although I said that the tab browsing feature makes QTTabBar special, you may disagree with me after knowing that there is another feature called drop-down browsing that lets you open any folder from your hard drive directly without the usual process of opening. The picture below will clarify what this feature is about.

You can directly open any internal folder right from My Computer.
Live Search
The QTTabBar will include a search box which will let you search for any file on any opened folder. For example, if your My Documents folder has hundreds of files, you can easily use the live search feature to find the file, document, or picture you need.
Image Tooltip
This feature lets you view an enlarged view of any picture file without opening them with any software such as Windows Image viewer or Adobe Photoshop. Have a look below to get an idea.

Why open images to check which one looks better?
Tab Lock
This isn’t a password-protected lock. Rather, this is similar to a keypad lock. You can lock any tab you want just to avoid closing that tab accidentally. To lock, right click on the desired tab, and then click “Lock”. Your tab will be locked temporarily. You can easily unlock it at anytime.

Other Features
Even with all the previously mentioned features, there is still a few more features to be noted. Here they are:
- You can double click on a free area of any opened folder to go one step backward. This will make folder exploring faster.
- You can easily find out the history of recently closed and recently opened folders. This is useful for accidental closure of any tab/folder.
- You can customize the color of both active and inactive tabs. Also, you can set how many folders to go back to when you double-click on a free area.
- Keyboard shortcuts will make your desktop computing even faster.
Get Started with QTTabBar
Click here and download the latest version of QTTabBar. After extracting and installing the files, you will need to close all the open folders. Then, open My Computer (or any other folder). Uncheck the “Standard Buttons” option from the menu and check the “QTTabBar” and “QTTabBar Standard Buttons”. You can find those options by clicking on “View” then “Toolbars.” You can customize the QTTabBar to place it anywhere in your Windows Explorer you want.

I installed it, but I’m having a little trouble activating it in my folders. I can’t seem to find the “Standard Buttons” option. If you could go into a little more detail there that would be awesome.

Go to your windows explorer’s “View” from the menu bar of the top and select/deselect from the “toolbars” submenu. From there you can deselect old standard buttons and activate QTTabBar standard buttons.
That’s how I activated it on my PC when I used it.

Are you using vista or XP? I’m using vista and only have a “views” option which just changes the size of the folder icons.

O oh, I’m using XP and it works pretty fine here. I haven’t used vista so….
But QTTabBar standard buttons should be available under “Toolbars” menu or submenu. Usually toolbars submenu sits under the “View” menu. Please help yourself finding it out. Once you get it, you’ll feel the speed of work with the help of QTTabBar.
